This past December we harvested 2900 mielies from the Mielie Patch on Oliver's Village. We adopted an American farming method of planting 3 mielie plants closely together. The idea behind this method is to relinquish the outer perimeter of the crop to birds and making it too dense for them to go any further. The down side to this method is that the nutrients from the soil are then split between the three plants, we have a feeling that this led to less of a yield.
Our second mielie field is prepared for planting, we will be adopting the more traditional method of planting 2 mielies back to back and wait for the outcome of that crop. This is trial and error but with perseverance we will find the perfect solution to maximise the yield from the crop. The harvested mielies were distributed to our many grateful beneficiaries of the surrounding community.
